Books about Henry VIII and the Tudors

What are Roman Numerals?

Kings and Queens of Britain often have the same names. In order to avoid confusion we call them their name and then a number. Our present queen is the second Queen Elizabeth and so we call her ‘ Elizabeth the Second’

As a short hand for the numbers we use ‘roman numerals’ (numbers that the Romans used) – you’ll see a few of these on this site. Here’s a table of our numbers against roman ones.

1	I	Can you spot how they counted? Instead of having ten different symbols like we do (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0), for the numbers one to ten they only use three! (I,V,X) The king that this site is about was the eighth "King Henry", or Henry the eighth. Rather than put Henry 8, we put Henry VIII ( but you still say ‘Henry the eighth’) So now you know what all those funny symbols after the names are!

Parents and Teachers

All the information is historically correct as far as can be ascertained. Most of it has been gained from the books listed below and from various websites on the subject. However it is a well known fact that names and dates can vary from text to text and anomalies do occur. For instance it is a well known problem spelling the names of Henrys wives – there were 3 Catherines! I have used the method of spelling the name 3 different ways in order to minimise confusion. (eg Catherine,Katherine and Kathryn).

Why does this site carry advertisements?

This site is a victim of it's own success - started as a bit of fun, it now gets thousands of hits from around the world. Unfortunately this means that the costs of hosting the site can be high. FutureServers our ISP sponsors the site and shoulders some of the cost, but the rest is met by myself.
