Improve your immune system and don't get those colds and flu this winter!Everybody gets the snuffles this time of year, we all get sore throats, colds, have sneezing fits and feel a bit off. But did you know that there are lots of things you can do to strengthen your immune system so that you fight off the infections instead? Avoid Sugar - in all formsCompletely avoid refined carbohydrates, glucose and sucrose. Limit the intake of fructose (fruit sugar). Sugar weakens your immune system so it should be avoided when you feel you are coming down with something as digesting it will only add further strain on your body. Better still give up sugar all together and feel fantastic all the time! Find out how >> Eat a balanced dietEnsure that the diet is well balanced - lots of fresh, colourful (preferably organic) fruit and vegetables especially:peppers, broccoli, peas, cabbage, lemons, oranges, strawberries. Don't have too much fruit. Avoid smoking, alcohol, tea and coffeeAvoid potentially harmful agents including tobacco, alcohol and excesses of tea and coffee. They all put a strain on your body and that means your immune system is weakened. Take a vitamin supplementTake a multivitamin supplement, particularly one containing vitamins C and B in a good dosage. Take mineral supplements providing 5-10 mg of zinc per day for children and 20-30 mg of zinc per day for adults. Get some fresh air!Ensure that you get plenty of fresh air, sunlight and exercise. Turning up the heating in our centally heated homes is actually a bad thing. Get enough restGet enough rest! Go to bed early, take care of yourself for a few days. Remember we need more sleep in the winter months, so you might need 6 hours in the summer and 8 in the winter. Sleep is incredibly important, lack of rest has been linked with cancer, diabetes and increased accident rates.
